Donkey Beach

Going North on the 50, a half mile after mile marker 11 is a parking lot on the Right.

Although Donkey Beach is located on the "rainy side" of the island of Kauai, it get's an 8.5 because of the warmth and potential of consistent warm weather year round. The thing about Kauai is that no matter what ,the forecast says sunny or cloudy or rainy, you could have them all on any given day. Kauai is just like that. We had 3 days of sun while there when we went in May while the forecast was calling for showers.

Acceptance/Legality: 4

No beach in Hawaii is technically legally nude. But like all nude beaches, they are difficult or a long walk to get to, so it's just accepted because of it's remote location. This beach is around a 1/4 mile long and used to be nude, but since they put in this really nice bike path just above it, it is nude at your own risk. Mostly just the occasional topless woman. We went on a Saturday in May, seeing very few people even topless. We met a local and she confirmed that we were the first nude folks in a long time.

Trail: 9

This is by far the nicest and easiest trail we have ever seen, which is probably why this beach is not a nude beach anymore. They put in a lot of money for the back path and the parking lot has bathrooms. Easy peasy. You could even bring a wagon to haul all your beach gear if you wanted. There are several slight earth terrain paths to get to the sand but very doable.

Privacy: 2

There is really no privacy on this beach. There are houses, bikers, runners, and other beach goers that can see you at any time. There are some trees, but because the beach is curved, you can be seen at any time from multiple angles. 

Nude Etiquette: 9

This beach however, does have homes that overlook it and and bike path just above it with passerby's that can take in the beach and anyone on it. The atmosphere in Hawaii islands is really so different than on the mainland. We found people cordial, polite and considerate in giving space. In other words, there weren't a lot (if any that we could see) creeps. This made for a very relaxing time.

"Creeps or Pervs" are the guys that stare or position themselves to to another person to get a good view. They also may touch themselves inappropriately. They can give a vibe even if they are doing nothing observably pervy. 

Sand Comfort: 9

Sand is soft and golden. This beach does get a lot of ocean trash washing up on it, so if you feel inclined, bring a bag to help pick up pieces of plastic etc...

Water Temp: 8

Kauai ranges from 78-80 degrees year round. 

Shade Option: 7

There isn't shade everywhere, but there are some trees in spots. Don't bother with an umbrella unless you are ok with losing it. The winds are lovely but strong here. 

Family Friendly Waves: 2

Maybe there is a chance that the surf settles down, but because of the windy side of the island, the surf seems like it would always be dangerous here. Nice to watch, and ok for avid swimmers to dip, but not ok for children or those that can't swim.

Amenities: 6

Donkey beach has a paved bike path running along side it. It's one of the reasons that it is no longer really a nude beach. But on the plus side, it has bathrooms and trash bins and easy access from your car. Somewhat long walk, but easy and mostly paved till you get to the sand.

Snorkling: 1

The waves are really wild here. I wouldn't suggest any snorkeling.

Wild Life Saftey: 9.5

Not much danger here. Just some silly sand crabs. I don't even think there would ever be a mosquito problem as Donkey beach is on the East side, so there is quite a bit of wind. 

Sunset Location: 2

Because of the location on the East side of the Island, Donkey beach doesn't really have a direct view of the sun for setting. It may be beautiful clouds or sky colors but no sunset. Sorry.
