Makua Beach, Highway 93 W 21.526523, -158.227899
Weather: 9
ACCEPTANCE/LEGALITY: 7
No beach in Hawaii is technically legally nude. But like all nude beaches, they are difficult or a long walk to get to, so it's just accepted because of its remote location. This beach is around 1 mile and you start to see nudity about a 10min walk to the middle. The beach has two entrance points on either end so the nudity is accepted in the middle where most don't bother walking to. It is always amazing to us, how few people there were at all on such a beautiful beach (the best on the island in our opinion). We went on a Saturday in May, seeing very 2-3 people nude besides our group of 3.

TRAIL/ACCESS: 8
This is an easy walk for a Hawaiian Nude beach. No cliffs or slippery rocks. Just flat sand. We gave it an 8 simply because it's semi long to get to the nude section.
Park in the large parking lot and then walk straight through the yellow gate you see in the top photo. Then keep walking about 5 min till you can find a path going toward ocean. There are several. The longer you walk in the woods the less you have to walk on the sand which is always more challenging. Once you hit sand, keep walking North a bit till you can't really see the folk on either the South or North end of the Beach. This is the sweet spot for nudity.

PRIVACY: 8.5
This beach has no tall trees, just shrub types along the back. Bring and umbrella if you want to sit closer to the ocean. We give this an 8 for privacy because in the middle section of this beach we saw 2 people all day.
When in doubt on any beach, place a wind screen or umbrella down to block someone's view if needed. |
